Welcome to the Citizen Literacy Testing + Feedback Exercise!
Thank you for your interest in our work. On this page you will find links to evaluation copies of our adult literacy App prototype and our Course Resources, together with guides about how to use them and provide feedback. There are over 6 million people of working age in the UK with very low levels of literacy (UK GOV). There are some negative stereotypes about these people, and it often comes as a surprise to know that many are in work and own and use a smartphone. To find out more and about our contribution to improving this situation please read our ‘White Paper‘. Our work is focused on improving the literacy of adults who are already speakers of English. Feedback from colleagues who teach ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) has indicated that many of our tools and resources will be of use to them, especially for ESOL literacy learners.

The App

The prototype test web version of the app is available at this web link https://citizenliteracy.com/beta5/. It is for beginners and will open the first Lesson (of 30) from our beginners literacy course. Lesson 1 contains 13 different learning activities. By the end of Lesson 3 learners are starting to read and write simple sentences. The finished App will be free, open access, with no adverts, and no capture of personal Data. Remember for best results please only use the Chrome web Browser on a laptop or desktop PC, and please note that the voice recognition function in this test web version will not work on Apple iOS devices (iPhone & iPad) but should be OK on Mac laptops and desktops. For best mobile experience: The App should work in the Chrome Browser on most Android devices. Please note the voice recognition system can be a bit slow with the first couple of attempts.

Question Mark Icon

Tap the pulsing question mark icon at the bottom of every screen to access directions from the virtual tutor. You can find guidance on how to use and provide feedback about the app in this downloadable PDF. You can also find a short video about the course and how to use the App at this YouTube link.

  • We are releasing the first Lesson (of 30) in the prototype App to get feedback to guide our design and development activities and to catch bugs.
  • The final version of the Student App will be free to use, with no registration required, no adverts and no personal data recorded – it is being made available as a common good.
  • The App uses voice and handwriting recognition technologies for learner input and features virtual tutor voices to provide information and directions to learners.
  • Please remember this App is designed for low literacy users, so we do not use traditional text-driven interfaces. Lesson 1 is for adults just starting out on their learning journey, by the end of Lesson 3 they are starting to read and write short sentences.
  • There will be a Teacher version of the App that will be available as a ‘web app’ that will runs on most devices and be suitable for classroom use with smartboards etc and with Teacher extensions. The Teacher App will also be free under the same terms as the Student App.

App Feedback Options:

  • If you would like to get involved in taking part in our research and evaluation exercise please head over to our ‘Get Involved’ web page where you can register your interest and we will get back to you
  • If you would like to complete a short questionnaire about using the App and Course Resources from a teaching point of view then this Teacher’s online form will be perfect for you
  • For people who would like evaluate the app as ‘advocates’ on behalf of learners or as ‘surrogate testers’ (someone who is trying out the app with a view to sharing it with someone else they think would benefit from it). Then this Advocates’s online form is the one for you.

About the App: Currently, the app is running as a prototype ‘web-app’ with all the functionality of the final app. We are releasing the test version in this way so that we can get user feedback from learners, learner advocates, adult literacy teachers and anyone who is interested in improving adult literacy. This will help us to make the app and Course Resources as good as we can and find bugs. When it is ready, the app will be converted into a native smartphone app that will be available from the Apple App Store and the Android Play Store. The Apps can be used on its own by learners and teachers but is intended to support the face-to-face adult literacy course we are developing, with a comprehensive set of learning resources, and teacher support materials.

The Course Resources

Teacher Handbook and
Student Workbook

We know our App is likely to get a lot of attention because of its novelty, but it is our Course Resources that are at the heart of our work: The Teacher Handbook and Student Workbook. These can be dowloaded as PDFs from these links:

About the Course Resources: These are designed for teachers to use in face-to-face sessions with their students. They are paper-based because that makes the most sense for adult literacy classes, together with free online add-ons. The App supports the Course Resources. Our experience and research have indicated that there is a shortage of adult literacy learning resources available. By the end of Lesson 3 learners are starting to read and write simple sentences. Our development work is based on the collective experience and insights of some of the leading adult literacy teachers in the UK. The App and Courses Resources we are developing fill an important gap in the adult literacy education sector in the UK and beyond. We think they are distinctive because they provide the following important features:

A structured and integrated blend of phonics, grammar, alphabet awareness and punctuation for adults just starting out in literacy learning

It is from this perspective that we have decided to adopt a structured educational design using a mixture of phonics and traditional literacy methods together with modern technologies that our learners can relate to. Our aim is to develop the learner’s ability to analyse and understand the structure of their own spoken language and relate it to its textual form. This provides a basis for their continuing educational development. We describe our approach as a ‘nuts and bolts’ method of developing literacy abilities – for both learners and their teachers. The Handbook and Workbook will be for sale at as affordable prices as we can make them.
